Dull Is Good

August 8, 2021 by vdxqu

We had some great backyard bird production this year…many youngsters of all varieties so I’m happy about that. Of interest of late is this immature Redheaded Woodpecker. We’ve seen adults often over the last few years, but never had an jimmy showing up like this one does. It has just one little red spot on … Read more

Homecoming

April 28, 2021 by vdxqu

As spring goes, the backyard has been active with all of our year-rounders. Cardinals, Jays, finches of various kinds come around daily. Some have been lying lower than normal. I caught this Red Belly in a good spot the other day, and was happy with that. This morning though seemed to be like a grand … Read more

Ready To Rumble

September 22, 2020 by vdxqu

It takes a lot of energy to defend your flower patch or feeder from intruders…be they other hummingbirds, bees, or butterflies. This guy has always been up for the challenge. This image is kind of special to me…it was just a pose I’ve wanted to catch for a long time. Hummers go into this little … Read more

The Migrators

September 9, 2020 by vdxqu

In recent days I’ve noticed a few of the early migrators passing through. Nighthawks are one of the earliest to leave, mainly because they eat insects and those tend to drop off quickly once the weather cools. We’ve also lost our dominant male Hummingbird, and most of the Orioles. A few, like this one remain … Read more
