I’ve been spending some time with this old clammer lately. It’s just a matter of trying to get a good, cloud based background with a little color it in. Some Iowa sunsets, particularly those mixed with a little foul weather, can help.
This sculpture, named Mississippi Harvest was done by Illinois artist, Erik Blome, and depicts a typical clam harvester from the early 1900’s. Freshwater clams, and more particularly their shells, were a hot commodity back in the day. Muscatine was the epicenter of the pearl button industry for several decades, with top production reaching 1.5 billion buttons per year. Talk about a bountiful harvest!
